At  Urbanista we honor the women legendary as Matilde Montoya, who achieved the seemingly impossible through sheer determination and forever changed the course of medicine in Mexico. In 1887, Matilde became the country’s first female doctor, breaking down barriers in a male-dominated field and paving the way for future generations of women to follow in her footsteps.

Born in 1857 in Mexico City, she demonstrated exceptional intelligence and determination from a young age. Despite facing criticism and social obstacles, Matilde she persevered in her dream of studying medicine. Her graduation was a historic landmark that not only challenged the norms of her time, but it also laid the groundwork for the inclusion of women in higher education and in the scientific professions.

Matilde Montoya she was not only a pioneer in her field, but also became an advocate for women’s rights, fighting for their access to education and employment opportunities.
